Tollwood Festivals, Munich
The Tollwood Festival takes place twice a year. In summer, the festival takes place in the southern Olympia Park, and offers a total area of approx. 30,000 square metres, 24 days long, with more than 250 shows of various types, more than half of which are free. The Winter Festival takes place in the Theresienwiese. In addition to the "best Christmas Market" (AZ), two-thirds of which is located in heated tents, Tollwood offers a unique, for Germany, En-Suite programme and a high quality program of cultural performances, modern dance and theatre on a daily basis. For three weeks, from late June unto July, the Olympia-Park terrain becomes a township of tents and stages.
Culinary delicacies from all over the world are on offer, and international music and cabaret artists perform. The summer Tollwood usually has some big name musicians playing - but they're mostly older "has-beens" such as Status Quo. Numerous tents devoted to musical performances, circus shows, music hall and stage plays delight audiences. There are also many stalls selling craft items, jewelry and things from all over the world. During the Christmas period that is in November- December, another Tollwood festival takes place, this time on the Theresienwiese, where the Oktoberfest happens. This is very much an alternative Christmas market, Tollwood and Christmas market all rolled into one. The winter festival is a popular destination for Glühwein drinking and buying Christmas presents.
Cheap tickets are an important part of the calculation of the festival. More than half of the cultural programmes are free, and others are about 20 percent lower than typical prices for the region.
This tent spectacle at the Theresienwiese offers an exciting mix of international musicians and drama groups, performances and live music. Art and culture as well as the popular Market of Ideas with handicrafts and cuisine from all over the world turn a visit to Tollwood into a very special experience.
