One of Germany’s major cultural centers is Munich,which is the home of about 1.5 million people.Munich is second in terms of the Museums and theater counts in the world,the first being Berlin.Located at the foot of Alps,it is one of the most happening cities in Germany considering the number of festivals celebrated here.
The Museum of Antiquities(Antikensammlungen),Munich is located in the 19th century neoclassical hall on the south side of Königsplatz.It has faced several reallocations across a period of about 100 years from one Museum to another.Ludwig I wanted to transform Munich into second Athens.It is around his vase collection, that the collection of The Museum of Antiquities(Antikensammlungen),Munich has developed.Initially The Museum of Antiquities(Antikensammlungen),Munich was called the Museum of Antiker Kleinkunst.It was also called the Museum of small works of ancient Art.There are several collections in the Museum that are of less artistic value or small in size.
As one will enter the Museum of Antiquities (Antikensammlungen), Munich ,he or she will be in the middle of a large central hall.In the halls are collections from all parts of Mediterranean.There are approximately more than 650 Greek vases exhibited in the five main floor halls.One can also find pottery which has almost reached perfection.Most of these collections in The Museum of Antiquity(Antikensammlungen),Munich are dated back to 500 B.C.There is on oldest collection , which dates back to 3000B.C.It is called "the goddess from Aegina".Along with the Mycenaean pottery exhibits , which is in room number I,there is Mycenaean figure carved out from a mussel shell.There are good collections of large Greek vases discovered from Sicily.They are exhibited in the upper level of the central hall. There are good collection of Greek,Roman and Etruscan jewellery, as one takes his stairs down the central hall to the lower level of the Museum.Along with this room are rooms devoted to ancient coloured glass,Estruscan bronzes and Greek terra cottas.
Other important museums in Munich are Alte Pinakothek,Neue Pinakothek,Pinakothek Moderne,Deutsches Museum,Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum,Lenbachhaus,Hypokunsthalle,BMW Museum,Beer-and Oktoberfest Museum,Hausderkunst,Glyptothek etc.Though Munich was swept twice by two worldwars but still it continues to attract visitors and tourists from worldwide for its rich culture.
