Asam’s Church (Asamkirche), Munich
Address: Sendlinger Strasse 32, Munich, Bavaria, Germany
Munich, DE

St. Asam Church / Asamkirche, this Rococo church in Munich is also known as the St. Johann Nepomuk Church. The church was built in 1733-46 by brothers Asam so it’s named after its builders. This Architectural Building is a Historic Landmark.

In 1729-30, sculptor and painter Egid Qurin Asam bought two properties that he intended to convert to a family home for himself. He subsequently acquired a plot of land next to these properties, where he wished to build a church dedicated to the honor of the newly canonized St. John Nepomuk, a 14th-century Bohemian monk who drowned in the Danube.

At the same time, Asam's brother Cosmas Damian Asam bought a piece of land on which he built the presbytery. The church building is joined to the home of Egid Quirin Asam by a corridor; the artist could see the main altar from one of his bedrooms.

It is a small but unique church featuring a rare and striking unity of style. In the church's dimly lit interior, with its uniquely shaped single nave, no surface is left undecorated. A number of paintings done on the walls are surrounded by rich red stucco and lavishly gilded woodwork, a superb illustration of the Bavarian passion for ornamentation. Despite the many decorates vying for the visitor's attention, the eye is irresistibly drawn to the altar, which features a sculpted group of the Holy Trinity. It is a religious site which draws not only the worshippers but tourists from around the world.
This church is a masterpiece of the baroque and captivates by the splendid already nearly überladenen equipment. However the small church works inside much more largely. Worth seeing is the quiescent pole in the midst of the animated city.
