Holy Ghost Church Munich

Apart from being the capital of Bavaria, Munich is one of the largest and one of the most prominent cities in Germany. With its various churches, castles, palaces, parks, gardens, art galleries and museums, Munich has much to offer. Holy Ghost Church, Munich is one of the significant tourist attractions in Munich.

This church features Gothic styles of art and architecture. Earlier, it was owned by the Hospice of the Holy Ghost. However, this church was later reconstructed between the years 1724 and 1730 by Johann Georg Ettenhofer.

The interior of the Holy Ghost Church, Munich features exquisite Roccoco paintings and, rich and elaborate embellishments. In 1885, when the Hospice building was destructed, Franz Lowel included three sections or compartments to the west part of the church. This lent the church a stately look of Neo-Baroque style. But again during the Second World War, the church underwent massive impairment. The antiques and the other decorative items in the interiors were largely ruined. This was followed by large scale refurbishments of the Holy Ghost Church, Munich in order to regain its previous glory. Only the northern part of the central hall, and the space for the choir which formed a part of the original church, still remain intact.

The tower features a typical lantern dome. The Neo-Baroque look of the church indicates extensive use of constituents taken from the Viscardi’s Trinity Church. The interior of the Holy Ghost Church, Munich is divided with a walking passage around the choir. The passageways comprise of in-built arches and vaults. The central portion of the church features a vault shaped like a barrel. There are small vaults or arch-like structures over the windows.

The Holy Ghost Church, Munich houses many interesting features reflecting artistic and sculptural skills. You will notice the parts of a bronze structure in the porch. This was built in 1608 by Hans Krumper, who made it for Duke of Bavaria – Duke Ferdinand. The sanctuary includes a high altar which was constructed by Nikolaus Stuber. Here you will also notice the commendable piece of artwork “The Effusion of the Holy Spirit”, by Ulrich Loth. There are also two marvelous statues of angels built by Johann Georg Greiff.

The interior of the Holy Ghost Church, Munich also features several gorgeous paintings on the walls by Peter Horeman. Those paintings indicate the “Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit”. There is a crucifix resembling late Gothic styles in the Kreuzkapelle. Along the left passageway, there is an incredible figure of the “Hammerthaler Madonna.”
