Odeonsplatz Munich

Germany - Cologne - Dusseldorf - Frankfurt - Munich - Stuttgart - Hamburg - Berlin
Odeonsplatz, Munich
Odeonsplatz is a large pedestrian square on the north side of Munich's central old town. Until 1791, the Schwabinger Tor, which was built in 1391 stood at the Odeonsplatz. It was the main gate connecting Munich with the old village Schwabing.

In 1816, Ludwig I commissioned Leo von Klenze with the planning and completion of all the main buildings around the odeonsplatz. Klenze was fascinated by the architecture of ancient Rome and the renaissance. He made the square the focal point of two main streets, the Ludwigstrasse and the Briennerstrasse.

The square is flanked on the East side by the Residenz on the South side by the Feldherrnhalle and on the West side by the Theatinerkirche. Adjoining the Residenz is the restored Nationaltheater, home of the acclaimed Bavarian State Opera and Bavarian National Ballet.
Running west from Odeonsplatz is the wide shopping avenue, Briennerstrasse, leading to Königsplatz. Flanking this large Grecian square are three classical buildings constructed by Ludwig I # the Propyläen, the Glyptothek, and the Antikensammlungen. The busy Ludwigstrasse runs north from Odeonsplatz to the section of Munich known as Schwabing.

The most prominent structure on the Odeonsplatz is the Feldherrnhalle or Field Marshal's hall, which sometimes makes the Odeonplatz look like an Italian square.

On the east of the Feldherrnhalle is the Hofgarten, a Renaissance court garden dating from Duke Maximilian I time (1613-1617). It is laid out after an Italian formal garden and features a central temple crowned by a doomed roof with a copy of a bronze figure symbolizing Bavaria.

On the west of the Feldherrnhalle is the copper-domed Theatinerkirche or Theatiner Church.

Odeonsplatz, Munich's most beautiful square. Every year in July an open air classical concert takes place on Odeonsplatz known as Odeonsplatz Classical Evening.

On the first Sunday before 17th March, there is also the annual St. Patrick's Day parade and concert here.
