Kunstmuseum Stuttgart

Germany - Cologne - Dusseldorf - Frankfurt - Munich - Stuttgart - Hamburg - Berlin
Inaugurated in March 2005, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart is a cubic-shaped Museum with a display area of 5000 sq.mt. The Museum appears like a beautiful glass cube during the day and at night the white limestone of its walls appears illuminated with light.

Kunstmuseum Stuttgart inherits the riches of its collection from Galerie der Stadt Stuttgart. Many of the priceless exhibits were gifted by Marchese Silvio della Valle di Casanova in 1924. Some of the notable collections include works of Otto Dix, Adolf Holzel, Dieter Roth and Willi Baumeister.

When Johann Karl Schmidt took over as the director of Kunstmuseum Stuttgart in 1986, he worked at the exhibitions of those noteworthy German painters who had some connection with South West Germany. He was instrumental at expediting loans of exhibits from other Museums. Among the numerous exhibitions held in the Museum, some of them were the collection of Rudolf and Bertha Frank, in 1994 the collection the Konrad Knöpfel Foundation Fritz Winter and in 2001 the collection of Etta and Otta Stangl were displayed.

Kunstmuseum Stuttgart is presently under the care of Marion Ackermann. The Museum has undergone several rounds of expansion.

At present Kunstmuseum Stuttgart has 15,000 exhibits-all of which date from late 18th century to the contemporary art. Among the exhibits, particularly famous are the German paintings from the 18th to the 19th centuries; the paintings carry in them a distinct parochial tone. The artists such as Philipp Friedrich Hetsch and Johann Baptist Seele were some of the best endorsers of South West German classicism. The Swabian impressionism, which formed a major corpus of Casanova’s donation, were showcased in the works of Otto Reiniger, Christian Landenberger and Hermann Pleuer.

Kunstmuseum Stuttgart also has a well stocked book shop, most of the books come from Köln-based bookseller Walther König, an esteemed bookseller in the country.
