A popular art gallery and art museum in Stuttgart, Staatsgalerie (state gallery) is counted as one of the best Museums in Europe. When it was first opened in 1843, Staatsgalerie (state gallery) also served as the Royal Art School.
Staatsgalerie was built between the years 1838 and 1843 following the orders of King Wilhelm I of Wuerttemberg.
Staatsgalerie (state gallery) suffered complete destruction in the World War II and was reconstructed in 1946. Some of the vast collections of the Staatsgalerie (state gallery) include- Old German Paintings, Dutch Paintings between the period 1500-1700, Pieces of Art which exemplify the movements from 19th century to the 20th century.

In 1984, Staatsgalerie (state gallery) received a neighbor building in Neue Staatsgalerie. The Museum was designed by James Stirling, who used many innovations to the design. Neue Staatsgalerie has an impressive collection of 20th century modern art- of artists like Pablo Picasso and Joseph Beuys.

Apart from many notable exhibits, Staatsgalerie (state gallery) also has a sunken doorway of Doric columns which were excavated during archeological expeditions.

Staatsgalerie (state gallery) also has the Department of Prints and Drawings, which contains a collection of over 400,000 works of art on paper.

Apart from its own vast collection, Staatsgalerie (state gallery) also holds special annual exhibitions of loaned exhibits from other international museums.

Some of the permanents exhibits in Staatsgalerie (state gallery) include- Pablo Picasso's "Tumblers (Mother and Son)" - 1905, "Laufende Frauen am Strand" - 1922,"The Breakfast in the Free One" 1961, Max Beckmann’s Journey on the Fish, Franz Marc’s The Small Yellow Horses, Henri Matisse’s With the Toilet (La Hair-style), Joan Miro’s The Bird with the Calm View, the Wings in Flames.

Staatsgalerie (state gallery) is open from Tuesday to Sunday. It opens at 10 and closes at 6 in the evening.
