Public Holidays

There are a large number of public holidays in Germany, during which all the schools, colleges, offices and other institutions remains closed.

All public holidays in Germany are decided by the Federal states. The country has around 13 to 14 public holidays. Starting for January, right down to December, there are public holidays throughout the year.

The various public holidays in Germany are as follows:

  -   New Year's Day, known as Neujahrstag in German, is celebrated on the 1st of January.

  -   Epiphany, known as Heilige Drei Könige in German, is celebrated on January 6th. This is basically a Christian feast, which celebrates God's revelation to mankind.

  -   In the month of April, Good Friday, or Karfreitag in German, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are declared as public holidays. This year Good Friday will be held on the 6th of April.

  -   On the 1st of May, Labor Day is a public holiday.

  -   Ascension Day, or Christi Himmelfahrt in German, is public holiday in the month of May.

  -   Whitmonday, also known as Pentecost Monday, is celebrated in the month of May. This is also a Christian holiday.

  -   Corpus Christi or Fronleichnam, in German, is held in the month of June. It is usually celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday in honor of the Holy Eucharist.

  -   Peace Festival is a public holiday and is celebrated on the 8th of August.

  -   Assumption Day is celebrated on August 15th and is a public holiday in Germany. This day is celebrated in honor of the day on which Mother Mary's body and soul were united before she ascended to heaven.

  -   German Unity Day or Tag der Deutschen Einheit, in Germany, is a public holiday on the 3rd of October every year. It was on this day when East and West Germany were united in the year 1990.

  -   Reformation Day is a public holiday on the 31st October.

  -   All Saints Day is a public holiday on the 1st November.

  -   Repentance Day on November 23rd is a public holiday in Germany.

  -   Christmas Day on the 25th of December is a public holiday. This day is observed as Jesus' birthday all across the world.

  -   St Stephen's Day on December 26th is also a public holiday in Germany.

  -   The public holidays in Germany are assigned to the states in various combinations. All institutions remains closed on these days and they are marked with extensive celebrations and enjoyment.
