One of the most popular festivals of Hobart is the Cygnet Folk Festival is held
in the small town of Cygnet, just few kilometers from Hobart. The Cygnet Folk
Festival is one of the liveliest festivals of Australia.
Hobart Cygnet Folk Festival is a music festival held every year in the month
of January. It is a three-day festival, usually held in the second week of January.
The city has been hosting this grand festival for nearly 25 years now. It was
first held in the year 1982.
This music festival has a distinct history of its own. In 1979, a gentleman
called Mick Flanagan started a folk music club, called Huon Folk Club, in Tasmania.
This club held its meeting once every month and organized a large number of
programs where the artists could showcase their talent. Soon the club felt the
need to organize a festival, which will give the musicians of Tasmania an opportunity
to show their skills. Thus the first festival was held in 1982. At that time
it was known as Huon Folk Festival. Initially the festival was held in the month
of May. In 1983 it moved to March and eventually in 1984, it was held in January.
Since then it has been held every year in the month of January.
The Cygnet Folk Festival in Hobart is aimed at providing the musicians of Tasmanian
an opportunity to show their talent to the whole world. Not only the experts,
but also even the budding artists get a platform to showcase their talents.
Numerous workshops, dance shows, musical soiree and other events are held in
the Cygnet Folk Festival. The festival is a three-day event held from Friday
to Sunday. At the end of the festival, a party is thrown in the numerous clubs
and pubs of the town.
In order to see the festival, one has to buy tickets for the show. All tickets
have to be purchased in December. In the year 2007, the festival will be celebrating
its 25th anniversary.
