The name Sullivan's Cove was assigned to it by Lieutenant David Collins on the historic day of 21st February in the year 1804. The lieutenant made his way through a small rocky island named Hunter Island. Collins developed the connection to the shore during this period that is nowadays known as Hunter Street. This island now lies under the building for the Arts located on Hunter Street. Lieutenant David Collins chose the Cove mainly because of the supply of fresh water and protected port. The Sullivan's Cove in Hobart was earlier famous for the popular salt factories, abattoirs and bone yards. But nowadays this area has gained recognition as the most popular cultural and residential area of the city.
