Hong Kong Arts Festival
Hong Kong celebrates its elegant culture and tradition, rich heritage and customs through its varied festivals filled with glitz and glam, and fun and frolic. Hong Kong Arts Festival is one such fete recognizing Chinese art and culture.
This festival features great music like Artemis Quartet, Chucho Valdes Quartet, Camut Band's Life is Rhythm and many more. Orchestra music performed by Chinese Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestra are worth watching. The Jiangsu Province Kunqu Opera featuring The Peach Blossom, and Cantonese Opera, and the western opera, Welsh National Opera which stages La Boheme, are some other notable operas played in this festival. Different types of scintillating dances are also performed – single, group, ballet and tango. The Leipzig Ballet and Tango Buenos Aires are two of the prominent ones. The festival also includes some interesting theatrical performances by JP Morgan Chase Bank Showcase Propeller, Shu Ning Presentation Unit staging And Then There's You, Yohangza Theatre Company presenting A Midsummer Night's Dream , and Feria Musica staging Le Vertige du Papillon .
The Hong Kong Arts Festival hosts the Soweto Gospel Choir which presents commendable performances and the Feria Musica circus company performs amazing and magical feats. This year an astounding puppet show named YuYu MiMi – A Love Story was simply remarkable. The puppets are made out of wood and paper. The Lost Village is another superb theatrical presentation unveiling some secrets between Japan and China. The 12 Faces of Woman composed by Keith Chan Fai-young is another show worth watching.
The major venues where such shows and events of Hong Kong Arts Festival will take place in the city of Hong Kong are Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Center, Fringe Studio, Lyric Theatre and the Drama Theatre, and Hong Kong City Hall.
Other troupes like the Sylvie Guillem and Akram Khan feature shows like Sacred Monsters, which is a graceful combination of Indian classical dance and modern dance. Other important plays include Twelfth Night and Taming of the Shrew organized by the Watermill Theatre and Old Vic Productions. The National Theatre Company of China and New National Theatre will present Flowers in the Wind, which reveals a Sino-Japanese period.
