The varied events, activities and festivals taking place in Hong Kong reflect the exquisite Chinese art and culture, rich tradition and heritage. The Macau Arts Festival, Hong Kong celebrates the artistic excellence of Macau. Sponsored by the Cultural Institute of Macau S.A.R. Government, this seven-day fete is choc-a-bloc with exciting events and scintillating shows. Apart from the local feats, international performances also take place. Different types of movies are screened in this festival. The two major art exhibitions feature modern drama, comedies, Cantonese and Kun Operas, music and multimedia shows, acrobatics, puppet shows, Gypsy dance shows and ballet. In the past the festival has witnessed some excellent multimedia shows like Amina and Lili , and fascinating operas like Flowers in the Moonlight . Chinese farces like Who is the Father ? and Two Officials from Suzhou have also been staged. Some other fabulous shows were Maktoub performed by a Gypsy group and songs presented by Portuguese singer Marta Plantier. Popular ballets included Coppelia and Raise the Red Lantern . The kids enjoy the puppet shows. One of them already taken place in the Macau Arts Festival, Hong Kong was The Little Matchgirl. Traditional Chinese music – orchestra and solo, were also much commendable. Other events included “Memories of the Past” film cycle and “Beauty and Meaning – International Video Art Cycle”. The exhibition “Chinese Treasures” consisted of Chinese sites – Fujian Province, Yunnan Province, Beijing, Nanjing and so on and so forth. The Macau Arts Festival, Hong Kong takes place in many places of the city – Cultural Center, Ruins of St. Paul's, Dr. Sun Yat Sen Municipal Park and Senado Square. In the festival, there is an exclusive Arts and Crafts Fair in the weekend. It features Chinese handmade goods and unique handicrafts items made of paper, leaves and clay. The cultural shows include magical performances by Mexican and Portuguese folk dancers, American fire dancers and Canadian clowns. You will also get to see some amazing artworks and paintings. There is an interesting mingling of locals and overseas visitors, and you can get to meet some renowned artists as well. Hong Kong also hosts some other significant and similar events and festivals like Hong Kong Arts Festival and Le French May Festival of Arts. Each of these festivals reveals and mirrors the rich variety in Chinese art, and the refined taste and culture of the Chinese people.
