Legislative Council Building Hong Kong
Articles 66 to 79 of the Basic Law provide for the formation, term of office, powers and functions of the Legislative Council. The Legislative Council performs the function of enacting laws; examining and approving budgets, taxation and public expenditure; and monitoring the work of the Government. Additionally, the Legislative Council of the HKSAR has also been given the power to take part in the appointment and removal of the judges of the Court of Final Appeal and the Chief Judge of the High Court. It also has the power to impeach the Chief Executive.
Since the time of its establishment the Legislative Council has undergone many changes keeping in pace with the changing times. Some of the changes are also evident in the Legislative Council Building in Hong Kong.
The Legco Building, Hong Kong was originally built to house the Supreme Court in the year 1912. It is reminiscent of the old Victorian architecture, excepting the roofs, which are styled in accordance with the Chinese tradition. At present the Legislative Council Building, Hong Kong, acts as an important center for political discussions rather than a political organ.
The Legislative Council Building, Hong Kong is a Cenotaph, in the memory of those who lost their precious lives in the World Wars I and II.
