The St. John's Cathedral, Hong Kong was declared a historic building in the year 1996. After being built in the year 1847 and getting an extension in the year 1873, it is the oldest of all the Anglican churches built in the Far East region. During the 2nd world war, in the years 1942 to 1944, this church served as a Japanese occupation site. Substantial damage was made to the church during this period, which was, however, made up for later.
