Shanghai Tang sets out to create the first global Chinese lifestyle brand by revitalizing Chinese designs - interweaving traditional Chinese culture with the dynamism of the 21st Century. Thus, resulting in a fusion of the East meeting the West. In fashion, Shanghai Tang continues to evolve its distinctive style whilst employing elegance, comfort and vitality.
Hong Kong businessman David Tang Wing-Cheung founded Shanghai Tang in 1994. Shanghai Tang is the best of 5,000 years of Chinese tradition exploding into the 21st Century. Shanghai Tang offers an expanding range of home furnishing, accessories, novelty gift items, and a collection of men's, ladies' and children's apparel - all of which enhance the concept of revitalized Chinese arts.
When you enter this small but upscale two-level store you will see its gleaming wooden and tiled floors, raised cashier cubicles, ceiling fans, and helpful clerks wearing classical Chinese jackets. This is Chinese chic at its best, with neatly stacked rows of updated versions of traditional Chinese clothing, ranging from cheongsams and silk pajamas to padded jackets, caps, and shoes # all in bright, contemporary colors and styles.
If you're looking for a lime-green or shocking pink padded jacket, this is the place for you. There are even Shanghai tailors on hand to custom-make something for you. You will also find children's clothing and funky accessories and home furnishings, from Mao-emblazoned watches to silk-covered photo albums, beaded picture frames, and silver chopsticks silver-plated dim sum baskets and trinkets such as postcards and ma hwa teddy bears. And for that multitasking neo-Commie Cold-War nostalgist, Shanghai Tang offers a line of watches and cufflinks with Mao's image, so you can keep time with the revolution.
While noshing at Nobu Shanghai Tang's flagship store occupies 12,000 square feet of the historic Pedder Building in Central, Hong Kong. Two full floors exude vibrant charm as traditional Chinese decor is juxtaposed against modern Chinese motifs and contemporary Chinese art. It is this very fusion that personifies Shanghai Tang' unique style throughout the world. In September 1999, Shanghai Tang opened other new shops in Hong Kong. There are tiny branches in The Peninsula hotel, Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui and in Shop 6E140 of Hong Kong International Airport.
The company has also opened stores in London, Shanghai, Singapore and New York.
