Deeg is a city as well as a municipality in Bharatpur district in the state of Rajasthan in India. Situated at 32 km from the north of Bharatpur and 98 km north of Agra, Deeg is an ancient town. It finds its name in the Skanda Purana as “Dirgha” or “Dirghapura”. Deeg was first the capital of the Jat state of Bharatpur, when Badan Singh became the ruler in 1722. but later the capital was shifted to Bharatpur. Deeg is known for its beautiful forts, palaces, gardens and fountains. Deeg is famous for the fair it hosts in the month of September. The fair goes on for three days. During these three days the forts of Deeg are brought to life. Deeg has many palaces in it. These palaces draw large number of tourists every year. With all its palaces Deeg is a place of historic significance. The most famous of all its palaces is the "Sawan-Bhadon". The palace has a hollow ceiling. Inside the hollow portion are fitted rolling iron spheres. Water is made to flow into the ceiling, through these spheres. When the spheres collide with one another they make a sound that resembles the sound of thunderous clouds. According to the census of 2001 Deeg has a population of 40,826. Males constitute 54% of the population while the females 46%. The literacy rate of Deeg is higher than that of the national average. The average literacy rate of Deeg is 61% while that of India is 59.5%. The males have a higher literacy rate of 71% compared to the female folk's 49 %. 17% of the population is under six years of age. If you are planning to visit India, do keep Deeg in your itinerary.
