India abounds in forest life and has quite a few national parks and sanctuaries that contain hundreds of endangered species that thrive in there. Keoladeo National Park (Bharatpur National Bird Sanctuary) is one such national park that shelters hundreds of varieties of winged creatures.

This National Park of India is a famous place to witness countless varieties of birds that are very rare and highly endangered. Reportedly over 230 species of birds have made this place their home. Birds like the Siberian Crane which is considered in the endangered species list is also seen here during the winter season. This place has 28.73 sq km of lake and wetland therefore quite naturally attracting a huge number of water and other varieties of birds.

The Keoladeo marshes also known as Bharatpur, was previously a private hunting reserve for the kings of Bharatpur. Developed in the late 19 th century, this place with its lakes has attracted a great number of birds. Two thirds of the park lies underwater while the remaining portion is covered by dry deciduos type forests like Acacia, Ber, Kadam and Khajur trees and also has extensive grasslands and has about 44,000 trees used for nestling and is one of Asia's finest birding areas, with over 380 resident and migrant species, including the Common , Demoiselle and the rare Siberian Cranes, Solitary Lapwing, Indian Courser, Imperial, Indian spotted Eagles, Darters , Black Bittern, Greater , Painted Snipe among others. This place was declared a Protected Sanctuary in 1971 by the Indian Government and later was declared as a World Heritage Site.

This place makes for an excellent tourist spot and is a treat for bird-lovers and the best time to visit is during the months of November to March that is usually the whole of the winter season in India.
