India has often been called as the exotic land of mystical monuments and beautiful temples situated in an ancient yet fascinating atmosphere. Amongst the countless places of historical and monumental value, Mathura stands tall as the mythological birth place of Lord Krishna, the complete incarnation of Vishnu.
Mathura is one of the holiest cities in India. Situated on the west bank of river Yamuna, this ancient city has no dearth of places of religious and historic interest.
In ancient times, Mathura bustled with activity and was a city full of life. Mathura was located on the important trade routes that went westwards to West Asia and the Roman empire; northwards via Taxila, Pushkalavati and Purushapur to Central Asia and the Silk Route and eastwards to China. It therefore became a sort of meeting point of various foreign as well as regional cultures and lifestyles.
Mathura had also the distinction of becoming the center of a distinct school of art between 1st century BC and 1st century AD. Trade and commerce flourished during the rule of Kushanas and under the able rule of the great Kanishka. In 11th century AD, Mahmud Ghazni , the Sultan of Gajani destroyed many Buddhist and Hindu shrines around Mathura. The city suffered further attacks in the following centuries and came under British rule in 1804. Despite all these obstacles and hindrances Mathura has secured its place today as an important place of pilgrimage
Places of historic importance abound Mathura as there are countless temples and forts in and around Mathura. Some of them would be the ruins of an old fort, Kans Qila, that exist on the banks of the Yamuna at Mathura built by Raja Man Singh of Jaipur., Sati Burj, a four-storeyed red sandstone tower was built in 1570 that is also yet another important historical monument. One also gets to see the Jama Masjid, the Vishram Ghat, Dwarkadheesh Temple and the Gita Mandir
