India, the land of historical and religious structures has a plethora of places that would satiate visitors who have interests in historical monuments or have a spiritual and religious bent of mind. The state of Uttar Pradesh has several places that fulfill both the above categories. Among the several places Virndawan is a very popular and historically significant place. Mythology says that this was the place where Krishna courted his beloved Radha and played pranks on the gopis or milkmaids. This is a land immortalised by stories of Krishna's love games. Virndawan lies at a distance of 10-15kms from Mathura, and centres on Krishna. Its major landmarks include temples, ghats and groves. The name 'Virndawan' is derived from 'Vrinda', which is yet another name for the sacred tulsi (basil) plant. A legend has it that the entire place was a tulsi grove at one time. This place is full of tales about Krishna and his boyhood pranks as well as his love games. Among the numerous places of interest in Vrindawan there are quite a few temples to choose from. The Banke-Bihari Temple built in1864 happens to be the most popular shrine around. Then there is the renowned Radha-Vallabh Temple that contains the crown of Radha-Rani placed besides the idol of Krishna. There is also the Jaipur Temple built in1917 has excellent sandstone carvings while the Shahji Temple was built by Shah Kundan Lal, wealthy jeweler of Lucknow in 1876 specializes in exotic marble carvings. The Basanti Kamra which is the darbar hall displays wonderful paintings and has amazing Belgian chandeliers. Also there is the Govinda Dev Temple which was seven-storied and was built by Raja Man Singh in 1590. It was said to have cost ten million rupees and the Mughal emperor Akbar had donated the red sandstone for its construction. Virndawan is also the home to the Vaishnavite sects who lead a life devoid of any physical luxury and are ardent devotees of Lord Krishna.
