Taj Mahal, Agra is one of the most recognizable icons of the India; in fact it has become synonymous with the existence of Agra as well as the country. Taj Mahal is actually a sepulcher, which was commissioned by the famous Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The construction of this iconic architectural marvel began in 1632 and continued up to 1648. There is confusion regarding the identity of the architect, who designed the monument, but then the popular opinion is that Ustad Isa was the principal designer of this enthralling landmark. Taj Mahal or “the Taj” as it is popularly known, is considered to be the finest instance of Mughal architecture. The history of the monument is interesting. It is said that after Mumtaz Mahal's death in 1631 while giving birth to her daughter Gauhara Begum, Shah Jahan became inconsolable. Many court chronicles record Shah Jahan's grief after Mumtaz's death. This phase in the emperor's life can be considered to be as the inspiration for Taj Mahal, which was built as a tribute to Mumtaz Mahal. Construction of the Taj Mahal commenced soon after Mumtaz's death and the principal monument along with its surrounding buildings and garden was completed in year 1653. As far as the architecture of Taj Mahal is concerned, it straddles many styles and trends. The style of the building has been influenced by Hindu, Persian and earlier Mughal architecture. Particular inspiration of the monument came from architectural marvels like Gur-e Amir, Humayun's Tomb, Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb and Jama Masjid in Delhi. The appeal of Taj Mahal is infinite and immortal and it will continue to enchant visitors of Agra forever.
