Ahmedabad is the largest city in the state of Gujarat and the seventh largest
city in India. It has a population of almost 5.1 million. The city is located
on the banks of River Sabarmati and was the capital of Gujarat from 1960 to 1970.
Ahmedabad was founded in 1411 as the capital of the Sultanate of Gujarat. Under
the British rule, a military base was established and the city was modernized
and expanded. Ahmedabad is called the Manchester of the east after its booming
textile industry. Ahmedabad was the epicenter of many Indian independence movements.
Ahmedabad gained importance as the commercial and political capital of Gujarat
with the creation of the state of Gujarat in 1960.
Ahmedabad is located at a height of 174 feet from sea level on a sandy and
dry area. Except for some small hills, the city is flat. Ahmedabad is divided
into eastern and western regions by Sabarmati River. Eastern part of Ahmedabad
is characterized by packed bazaars, shanty buildings, numerous places of worship,
main railway station and many landmark buildings. Western part of the city houses
educational institutes, modern buildings, well planned residential areas, shopping
malls and multiplexes.
Aside from the monsoon season, the climate of Ahmedabad is dry. The average
summer temperature is 33 degree Celsius and average winter temperature is 15
degree Celsius. The monsoon brings a humid climate from mid- June to mid- September.
The average rainfall is 93.2 cm.
Ahmedabad has a booming tourism industry. There are places like Sabarmati Ashram,
Jama Masjid, Dada Hari, Kankaria Lake, Akshardham temple, Law garden, science
city, bhadra fort and ISKCON temple which are worth seeing. There are a number
of museums also in and around Ahmedabad.
Ahmedabad has a number of very good hotels to choose from. Taj residency, Cama
