Ahmedabad is the largest city in the state of Gujarat and the seventh largest city in India. It has a population of almost 5.1 million. The city is located on the banks of River Sabarmati in north central Gujarat and was the capital of Gujarat from 1960 to 1970. The exact geographical location of Ahmedabad is 23.03 o N 72.58 o E in western India at a height of 53 meters from sea level. Ahmedabad spans over an area of 205 km 2 . The city is located in sandy and dry areas. Most of the localities and roads are often spread with sand, reflecting the increasing fallout caused by deforestation. Ahmedabad is well connected to most of the Indian cities and important cities in the world by flights. Indian railways connect most of the Indian cities to Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad is very well connected to other Indian cities by road also. Due to Ahmedabad's historical importance, the city and surrounding areas has many sites which are worth seeing. Ahmedabad is located at a height of 174 feet from sea level on a sandy and dry area. Except for some small hills, the city is flat. Ahmedabad is divided into eastern and western regions by Sabarmati River. Eastern part of Ahmedabad is characterized by packed bazaars, shanty buildings, numerous places of worship, main railway station and many landmark buildings. Western part of the city houses educational institutes, modern buildings, well planned residential areas, shopping malls and multiplexes. Famous tourist spots in and around Ahmedabad include Sabarmati Ashram, Jama Masjid, Dada Hari, Kankaria Lake, Akshardham temple, Law garden, science city, bhadra fort and ISKCON temple. There are a number of museums like Calico Museum, Lalbhai Dalapatbhai institute of Indology and Utensils museum which are worth spending time. Sarkhej Roja, Adalaj Vav and Shanku Water Park are tourist attractions nearby.
