Built to commemorate the birth centenary of the great poem and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the Ravindra Kalakshetra, Bangalore is a seat of art, culture and entertainment in Bangalore. While all the states in India has a Kalakshetra commemorating Tagore (except Tamil Nadu) the Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bangalore perhaps has the best equipped theatre and is therefore one of the most popular centres for cultural activities in the garden city of Bangalore. The Kalakshetra has a highly modern and technically developed auditorium with comfortable seats, great lighting systems, an improved acoustics and many other facilities to serve the audience better. In the entrance stands a statue of the great poet in a glass showcase that greets the audience visiting the kalakshetra. Recently the kalakshetra remained closed for as long as 6 months for the purpose of renovation that cost the Government a total of Rs60 lakhs. But after the renovation, the theatre not only became qualitatively even better but also looks gorgeous with satin curtains and sidelights. Construction and Inaugauration: While the Government of Karnataka collected the major fund necessary for the construction of Ravindra Kalakshetra, Bangalore, famous personalities like Shivaji Ganeshan, a popular Tamil cine actor and others also came forward to contribute for the construction of the Kalakshetra. On March, 9, 1963, Dr Humayun Kabir, the then Union Minister for Education of Karnataka inaugurated place and sine then the theatre is used for various cultural activities and seminars. Rent and Booking: The auditorium of Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bangalore is rented out for various cultural activities like dance, music, theatres or plays. The two time slots are 9Am to 2pm and 4 pm to 9 pm respectively. Following are the details of rents:
- Rs 850 per session for Kannada plays - Rs 1,000 for Kannada competitions and conferences - Rs 1,500 for music, dance, sugam, sangeeta and cultural activities of any languages other than Kannada. - Rs 4,000 for any kind of annual functions, conferences, orchestras and western music A few additional information: - The 'Puttannachetty Town Hall' built in the Roman Gothic style near the Ravindra Kalakshetra can accommodate a total of 1500 people comfortably. - The Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad is built in the same fashion as the Ravindra Kalakshetra, Bangalore
