Location of Bodhgaya is in the central part of the state of Bihar, in the northeastern part of India.It is the place of Lord Buddha's Enlightenment. This holy place is situated on the west of the Falgu River, which is a tributary of The Ganga, it is the part of the Ganges Plains. It is 13 km away from the south of Gaya and 113 km away from the south of Patna city. - The History: This town has its historical importance of its own. It is associated with Lord Buddha since ancient times. The region around Bodhgaya constituted the part of the first small kingdoms of India in the 7th century BC.The place came into limelight in 6th century BC, when a local prince Siddharth (also known as Gautam), leaving all material possession, attained Enlightenment or Nirvana under a Bodhi tree here. After gaining Enlightenment, Gautam was known as Buddha and spread his message of love and peace allover the world. The great Mauryan ruler King Ashoka built a small shrine to give tribute to Gautam Buddha. Subsequent rulers also left their mark on this shrine & those finally took the shape of the Mahabodhi temple. - How To Reach: Bodhgaya does not have an airport of its own.Even there is no railway station. You can reach there by road. The main bus stop in Bodhgaya is located near Sujata Bridge on the Falgu River on the northeastern edge of the town. Daily bus services connect Bodhgaya with Gaya, Patna, Nalanda, Rajgir, Varanasi etc. Bodh Gaya is connected by road to Gaya 12 kms, Nalanda 62 kms, Rajgir 46 kms, Patna 152 kms, Varanasi 215 kms, Calcutta 482 kms. Auto-rickshaws are important means of transport here. If you go there you can find huge number of auto-rickshaws in the road. - Visiting Time: The best time to visit this ancient city of Bodhgaya is during winter, which is between October & February.
