The climate of the Chennai has genuinely been segmented into three seasons - hot, hotter and hottest. Except for the relatively cool days of the four pleasant months, November to February, the weather in Chennai remains consistently hot and humid. The coolest month of December and January with an average temperature of 24 C is the best time for the tourists to visit the city of Chennai. Though the excruciatingly hot and humid weather in Chennai becomes unbearable at times but the relaxing cool sea breeze which sets in shortly after 3 PM daily makes the evening soothing and somewhat comfortable. But there is no doubt that it is best for the tourists to avoid planning a visit to Chennai during the scorching hot months of April, May, June and July. ). The lowest temperature recorded in Chennai is 15.8 °C (60.4 °F) and highest 47.1 °C (116.8 °F).
The Chennai monsoon usually stretches from October to mid-December and sometimes there is heavy downpour during some of the days of rainy season. The average annual rainfall is about 1,300 mm (51 inches). The city gets most of its seasonal rainfall from the north-east monsoon winds from mid-September to mid-December. Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal sometimes hit the city of Chennai.
