The Capital of Tamil Nadu and the fourth largest metropolitan city in India, the city of Chennai is known for its diverse temple architecture and cultural heritage. The Valluvar Kottam in Chennai is a monument constructed in honor of the poet saint Thiruvalluvar. The memorial was constructed on the site of an unused lake which was used for disposing the city's garbage. But the land was reclaimed and was justly used to construct the Valluvar Kottam in Chennai. The dedicated monument is the perfect way to pay tribute to the great poet and his memorable collection of works.

The Valluvar Kottam in Chennai was built in the year 1976 and is reputed to be the largest in Asia with a seating capacity for 4000 people. The Poet saint is a notable name in the cultural life of the Tamils. The Valluvar Kottam is situated at the corner of the Kodambakkam High Road and Village Road.

Features of Valluvar Kottam in Chennai

  -   The historical monument dedicated to Thiruvalluvar is designed in the exact shape of a chariot which resembles the Temple chariot in Thiruvarur.

  -   The Chariot contains a massive stone statue of the respected Tamil poet saint. The statue is 33 meters in height. The base of the chariot like monument contained the 133 chapters of the grand epic Thirukkural in bas relief.

  -   An interesting feature of the Valluvar Kottam is that, it stands unsupported by any pillars. The 1330 verses in the epic named Thirukkural written by the poet are depicted on the granite pillars surrounding the massive auditorium.

  -   Around 3000 blocks of stone went in the construction of the Valluvar Kottam in Chennai.
