Description of the Hill Palace Museum

Hill Palace Museum is the largest archeological museum in Kerala and is the official residence of the Kochi Royal Family. The museum was established in 1865 and the palace is situated at an approximate distance of 12 kilometers from Kochi on Ernakulam. The museum comprises of 49 buildings in the typical Kerala style of architecture. The place looks really nice with the well mowed and maintained gardens, fountains, lawns. However the claim to fame of the museum lies in the fact that it is India's first heritage museum ever. The museum comprises of ettukettu and was initially a palace maintained by the Department of Archeology. There are many stone collections, weapon galleries. The museum also has a gallery of contemporary art.

The palace cum museum goes on to display some fascinating exhibits of the Royal Family like paintings, murals, inscriptions, manuscripts and many other such related collections. The museum also has a gold crown studded with royal stones. There are about 200 antique pieces of pottery. The museum also goes on to host numerous other collections and the royal furniture belonging to the Royal Family.

Timings of the museum- The Hill palace museum is open on all days except Mondays and national holidays. The museum remains open for all visitors from 9.00am to 4.30pm and the tourists are supposed to buy tickets which for an adult is Rs.10 and Rs.5 for a child.

One can come here by flight or train by getting off at the nearest railway station Ernakulam. One can also come here by buses or cars. Tourists can get off at the International Airport near Aluva. There are bus services from Ernakulam and many private buses are provided for travel within Kerala.
