It was previously a princely state and then became all the more famous as a centre for the trading of spices. There were also the ancient travelers who had referred to this place in many of their writings. There were many foreigners also who had come and settled here. They were the Portuguese, the Dutch and then the British and they have greatly influenced the culture of Cochin.

The place is replete with the wonderful places where you can pay a visit and these places are the Paradesi Synagogue, the Santa Cruz cathedral Basilica and the St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica.
Transport in Cochin
The public transport in Cochin is predominantly dependent on the private buses. There are also the auto rickshaws and the taxis that ply. All these can be hired any time during the day. The only problem here seems to be the narrow roads that are often congested. But Cochin is most famous for the safe ports that are there. Innumerable cargo and passenger ships arrive here though the ferry is not very essential here.
