History of Santa Cruz Basilica in Cochin, Kerala

This is a Roman Catholic place of worship that celebrated five centuries of existence only recently in 2004. This old church boasts a most impressive history.

Francesco de Albuquerque built a place of worship which was blessed in 1503. The first Portuguese Viceroy, Francesco de Almeida built the edifice of a church and the foundation stone was laid on May 3, 1505.

This famous church in Cochin was partially destroyed by the British in 1795. It was rebuilt in the early twentieth century and consecrated in 1905 by the Bishop of Damao.

The Santa Cruz church was raised by Pope Paul IV to the status of a cathedral. On account of the historical heritage of the building, Pope John Paul accorded it the status of a basilica through a special decree in 1984.

Curently it is one of the eight Basilicas in India. It is considered the 'capital church' of the diocese of Cochin.
