The Willingdon Island, a man made island had been constructed by the materials dredged during the deepening of the Cochin port. The island is named after the former viceroy of India. Today, it is the commercial and industrial hub of Cochin and is also home to some of the best hotels, commercial offices and also important industrial headquarters. It is also one of the major artificial ports in India that serves as a principal connection to the other seaports of the world. The Willingdon Island is connected to the mainland or the Ernakulam District by the road and railway Venduruthy Bridge.
