India - Goa - Bodhgaya - Mysore - Pondicherry - Puri - Shimla - Srinagar - Trivandrum - Agra - Bangalore - Chandigarh - Varanasi - Hyderabad - Jaipur - Kerala - Kolkata - Pune - Udaipur - Darjeeling - Ahmedabad
One of the most vibrant and multi-faceted tribes in the world belongs to India. Every tribe in India has a specific set of customs, traditions, rituals and culture that is gradually coming into the limelight. Several features of the Indian tribal culture are now being appreciated by the city dwellers and even getting assimilated into the urban lifestyle. The most prominent element is the tribal arts and crafts of India that has caught international attention.

Tribal Artists

The tribal arts and crafts of India are one of the most fascinating parts of the tribal culture in India. The tribals are not trained artisans and rely on natural talent and skill to create some of the most magnificent pieces of arts and crafts. Art is an integral part of most tribes in India and it reflects in every aspect of their lifestyle. The tribal outlook towards arts and crafts in reflected in the way the tribals adorn their homes, in their own costumes and jewellery. Though, the costumes and jewellery are made of simple materials they are designed in the most exotic and attractive manner. The leading forms of tribal arts and crafts include painting styles like Warli, Madhubani, Batik, Patachitra, Miniature Paintings and Phad Paintings. Even the tribal jewellery is very attractive and is mainly made of beads, metals, lacquer and wood. These ornaments are shaped in the most unique shapes and designs.

One of the major tribal arts and crafts of India includes the Warli Paintings made by the Warli tribe that inhabits the state of Maharashtra. These paintings display village life, warli customs and traditions in the most intriguing manner. These paintings are usually made on the mud walls of the tribal homes. These paintings comprise of geometric forms, patchwork and dots that fuse together to produce a beautiful picture. Several tribes also decorate their homes in a very rustic but equally beautiful manner. Many of the tribes live in mud houses and while the mud is wet, the tribals stick flowers and leaves on the exterior walls of the house. Once the mud is dried and the flowers and leaves fall off, they leave behind firm impressions, which looks very charming.

The treasure of tribal arts and crafts of India is immense and has an astounding range, diversity and beauty.
