The term Dooars is derived from the word “doors�. The Dooars Valley serves as a gateway to the hilly regions of North Bengal and Bhutan. On the western side, the Dooars Valley stretches from the River Teesta up to the River Sankosh on its east. This green valley at the foothills of the eastern Himalayas covers an area of 130 kilometers and forms a major part of the Jalpaiguri district.
The valley is formed of immense lush greenery that is a rare sight for the eyes of a tired city dweller. The Dooars Valley is washed by several mountain rivers like the Teesta, Torsha, Jaldhaka, Raidak and their numerous tributaries. The entire area of the Dooars Valley is covered by dense forests. The roads are cut along these forests and a drive through these roads with dense forests on both sides can really be an unforgettable experience.
There are a number of wildlife sanctuaries in the Dooars Valley . The Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most famous sanctuaries in this area. A visit to this place can reveal a lot of rare species. You can see the one-horned Rhino which is the most famous inhabitant of this region. Other animals include the bison, leopard, different types of reptiles, wild boars, spotted deer and a large number of peacocks, the national bird of India. Other sanctuaries include the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary , the Gorumara National Park and the Buxa Tiger Project .
There are also several other places of sightseeing in the Dooars Valley in the Darjeeling district . Jayanti is located 30 kilometers away from Alipurduar and is good picnic spot. Other important places which you definitely should not miss while on a trip to the Dooars Valley are the Buxa Fort, the Malbazar and the Teesta Barrage.
