The Yogachoeling Buddhist Monastery is located at a distance of about a distance of 8-10 kilometers from the main town of Darjeeling . It is located towards the south of Darjeeling town. This Yogachoeling Buddhist Monastery is located quite near to the Hill Cart Road and not too far away from the Ghoom station. This beautiful monastery is placed at a height of 8,000 feet, just before you reach the Batasia Loop.

Also known as the Ghoom Gompa or Yogachoeling Gompa , it is the largest monastery of this region. It is also the most famous monastery around Darjeeling . Lama Sherab Gyantso, a Mongolian monk, who was also an astrologer, established this Yogachoeling Buddhist Monastery near Darjeeling , way back in the year 1875.

Inside the Yogachoeling Buddhist Monastery , it is really a wonderful sight. Colorful Buddhist hangings and sculptures adorn the big halls of this monastery. The Yogachoeling Buddhist Monastery also preserves some of the rare and invaluable manuscripts of the Buddhist religion. The Buddhist Tibetan Gospel, in 108 volumes, is also available here.

The Yogachoeling Gompa in Darjeeling is a property of the Yellow Sect of the Buddhists. The monastery houses the idol of a 15 feet tall Buddha, generally called the Maitreya Buddha (Coming Buddha).
