Darjeeling Carnival Event in Darjeeling

Darjeeling Carnival Event is a ten day colorful event held in the town featuring poetry recitations, painting tea drinking ceremony, a land rover rally, musical concerts and food festivals. It is a significant part of the Festivals and Events in Darjeeling held in the month of November every year. The event showcases the spirit of Darjeeling and its diverse culture. It has been a major attraction for the tourists and will continue to draw larger number of tourists in the years to come.

In course of the 10 day Darjeeling Carnival Event, the Queen of Hills comes alive with lively music and songs. The event is a product of the initiative taken by the citizens of Darjeeling to imbibe fresh life among the people after a long period of political strife that plagued the town and affected its economy. The entire community of Darjeeling comes together and displays the uniqueness of a diverse culture living together united.

Carnival in Darjeeling is the brain child of a group of 30 residents with the cooperation of the local and the state government organized the 10 day program volunteered the biggest ever event in a small budget sponsored by community business houses.

Music is the key of most of the Events in Darjeeling. Darjeeling is considered to be the breeding place of musician and it is also true that every other person regardless of age sings and plays some instrument or the other. Nepali Rock is very popular in Darjeeling and the Darjeeling Carnival Event has been enriched with rock performances from some of the best rock bands since its day of inception. Chowrasta or the Mall sways to the music of the popular local and Kolkata stars with English, Hindi, Bengali and Nepali songs.

Other events in Darjeeling during the Carnival include the Food Festival in which ethnic food and traditional beverages are prepared and served at the venue. Darjeeling is famous for tea which is considered as the 'champagne of the east'. The event, therefore, includes tasting of tea and a display of the history and culture of tea. There is also a display of paintings depicting the rich culture and the magnificent view of the Kanchenjunga in different colors as it appears at sunrise. Darjeeling Himalayan railway is the first heritage railway of the country and exhibits the unique engineering achievement of the Railways. Programs to create awareness on various natural disasters and health awareness and livelihood problems are conducted with deliverances and programs organized by the NGO's and the government.
