Tendong Lho Rumfaat Festival Darjeeling is basically a festival of the Lepchas community of Sikkim. But it is also celebrated in Darjeeling region with same enthusiasm and zeal. Tendong Lho Rumfaat means Prayer of the Tendong Mountain. So this festival is associated with the worship of Tendong Mountain. According to legend, the hill rose like a horn during the 'great flood' and saved the people. Lepchas considered themselves as the descendants of the people who survived the 40 days and 40 nights of rain by going to the top of Tendong Mountain. Celebrated in the month of August, this festival depicts the traditions and customs of Lepchas community. In Southern part of Sikkim priests worship the mountain while other parts of the region as well as neighboring region celebrated daylong cultural programs. In some part of the Darjeeling Himalayan region literary programs are also held on the occasion of Tendong Lho Rumfaat Festival. In Darjeeling people belonging to Lepchas community start preparations of the festival celebration from one week earlier. They wear their traditional costumes and take part in the cultural programs also. Besides, Darjeeling has other festivals too that are celebrated with same zeal and fanfare.
