Galib Academy & Library Memorial New Delhi

Mirza Ghalib was a famous poet of repute. The famous poet used to stay in the Mirza Ghalib Haveli during 1865 to 1869. There is a museum located in this Haveli which displays the photographs of the poet, books, the personal belongings of the poet and several other things. Just opposite to the famous shrine of Nizamuddin and near to the museum of the poet the Ghalib Academy & Library memorial, New Delhi is located.

The Ghalib Academy & Library memorial, New Delhi was established in the year 1969. The academy serves to be the literary and cultural institution of Delhi. Dr Zakir Hussain the third president of India Republic inaugurated the place to pay homage to the noble poet of the Mughal court. Mirza Ghalib is considered to be the best classical poet and also the best modern poet.

The academy is divided into three sectors. There is a library with plethora of books, a museum and an auditorium. The library consists of books that have a wide collection of poems from the great poet and also other contemporary poets. The Ghalib Academy & Library memorial, New Delhi was created to perpetuate the memory of the poet.

The prime attraction of the Ghalib Academy & Library memorial, New Delhi is the museum located on the fourth floor of the academy. The museum displays the beautiful photographs and paintings of the contemporary time. Some of the greatest possession of the academy is the paintings of Zauq, the court poet of Bahadur Shah Zafar and the painting of Altaf Hussain Hali who was rich devotee of Ghalib.

There are pictures which also depict the several phases of Ghalib’s life. Amongst other items on display are the extremely beautiful and ornamented specimens of calligraphy or katabas and waslis, in kufic script. He was profound writer. There are several calligraphies on display.

Ghalib's poetry has a character in the ideology to which the Academy pays homage that is the syncretism tradition and the universal values of Indian culture.

Among the personal belongings the chessboard, shoes, his walking stick and the cutlery are of prime importance. There are several artistic works of the modern artist describibg Ghalib are also on display. The dummies of his favorite foods are also displayed in the Ghalib Academy & Library memorial, New Delhi. The place is trying hard to lay a mark on Urdu literature.

The Ghalib Academy & Library memorial, New Delhi is accessible from any part of the city. It is open from Monday- Saturday. The people can visit the place from 11 Am to 5PM. The love for literature is the focus of the academy and anybody loving literature should visit the place. For the others it is a place of worship and learning.
