The Gandhi National Museum, New Delhi is located opposite to the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. The place is considered to be the most respectable place of pilgrimage for the people. The assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948 marked the origin of the museum.

The Gandhi National Museum, New Delhi is a two storied building which has the best information on the life of Mahatma Gandhi. The museum is an archive of books, journals, audio-visuals, art pieces and relics. The museum was inaugurated by the first president of independent India Dr. Rajendra Prasad in the year 1961.

The museum has a beautiful collection of informative books on the life of Mahatma Gandhi and the freedom movement of India. The museum has a rich collection of manuscripts. Around 25000 photocopies of telegrams, letters and notes written and received Mahatma Gandhi are present there.

The two best sections of the museum are the Photo Gallery and the Charkha Gallery. The photo gallery depicts the story of Gandhiji’s life. There are around 300 pictures with write ups and explanation depicting the biography of Mahatma Gandhi. Other than these pictures there are several other paintings and portraits of Gandhiji.

The best collection of the museum is the pocket watch, blood stained dhoti and the shawl that Mahatma Gandhi wore when he was shot dead. The bullet which hit him, his spectacles, and the bamboo stick is also a part of the museum. The two historical flags are also located inside the museum.

The exterior of the Gandhi National Museum, New Delhi is also well decorated. One of the famous statues of Gandhiji is located here. An imitation of Mahatma Gandhi’s House in Sabarmati where he used to stay with his wife is also created. Famous Bose's woodcut 'Walk Alone' carving in cement is a visual treat for the eyes of a visitor.

The Gandhi National Museum, New Delhi is a great example of Gandhian philosophy and literature. The audio visual shows on Indian freedom movement are shown on request.
