Lodi Garden is the prime among the parks and gardens of Delhi. Built in the mid-15th and the 16th centuries by the Lodi rulers of Delhi, Lodi Garden is the most famous among the joggers of the city. Cautiously preserved tree shades and the medieval monuments lend an allure to these gardens.
The present Lodi Garden of Delhi was re-landscaped in 1968 by J A Stein and Garrett Eckbo. This garden is recognized for its tombs, fountains, ponds, flowering trees, blossoming shrubs and artificial streams. Tombs of Muhammad Shah and Sikander Lodi are built in a distinctive octagonal pattern with central octagonal hall, verandahs, three arched openings on all sides and a slanting buttress at each angle of the arrangement. The Lodi tombs have a more solid plan, high dome, matching cenotaphs and better proportions.
The imposing Bara Gumbad or the Big Dome of Lodi garden in Delhi is mounted on an octagonal tomb. Decorated with turrets on corners, arches and stuccowork and ornamented interiors, its facades look as if it is twofold storey. A mosque was located next to the dome. Built with ashlar stone. This rectangular prayer-hall has five arched openings and is an excellent example of the early Mughal architecture.
The beautiful Shish Gumbad in the Lodi Garden of Delhi has incised plasterwork with floral patterns and Quranic inscriptions on its ceilings. You can notice a terrace of blue tiles that once adorned it. Besides these tombs, tourists can also visit the National Bonsai Park developed here, which has a delightful collection of miniature versions of several trees and plants. They look beautiful at sunset under soft light.
