National School of Drama in Delhi is the only theater institute in India of its kind. Set up in 1959 by the Sangeet Natak Academy, the National School of Drama is one of the training institutions in the world. Though it was initially a constituent unit of the Sangeet Natak Academy, in 1975, it became an independent entity that is presently being fully financed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

The National School of Drama in Delhi has two wings namely the Repertory and Theater-in - education. The former wing was set up with the sole aim of providing a platform to the graduates to stage and to test their creative expertise. The performances though in the initial level are mainly an experimental one later is performed on a professional level. Enjoy the festival that is organized by the company every year during the summer. The annual festival is a nice place to enjoy the old as well as the contemporary productions that are selected and staged before the audiences. The other wing was established to develop the concept of theater within the children who range belong to the group of 8 to 18 years of age. The Theater-in - education that has later been renamed as the Sanskaar Rang Toli is proud to host the numerous stage shows that it performs all throughout India. Besides these two wings, there are the active Extension Programme and the Publication Section. Shruti is the name of the literary forum that is housed by the National School of Drama.

Selection of the students is finalized through series tests that are recognized as one of the most difficult tests in India done solely on the basis of personal talent. After the students pass through the screening tests they are required to go through a phase of intensive hard work and training. Students are required to produce plays based entirely on their imaginations. These plays are then staged later in the public.
