The Indira Gandhi International Airport or the (IGI) Airport is one of the most famous and significant airports of India. It is named after Indira Gandhi, the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru and the first woman prime minister of India. The Indira Gandhi International Airport that is situated at the southwestern part of Delhi, the capital of India forms the domestic and international gateway of India. This airport also plays a major role by linking India with the rest of the world.

The Indira Gandhi Airport was previously known as Palam Airport. It was renamed as Indira Gandhi International Airport when the Terminal 2 or the new international building was set up on 2nd May1986. The old Terminal 1 or the Palam Airport at present is solely used for domestic operations and is still functional.

From the International Terminal or the Terminal II, about thirty-five airlines fly regularly to the most important cities of the world. Indian airlines including Indian, SpiceJet, Alliance Air, Air Sahara and IndiGo Airlines operate from the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Apart from this airlines like Jet Airways and Air India also operates from Indira Gandhi International Airport. This airport is also a significant base for other Indian carriers like Go Air, Air Deccan, Kingfisher Airlines and Air Sahara. Presently altogether about sixty-five domestic and international carriers operate from the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport is well equipped with the IIIA landing system that remains operational even during the misty and foggy weather. The airport also has two Delhi Airport has two non-parallel runways, among which Runway 28 is one of Asia's few runways that is equipped with CAT III-B Instrument Landing System.

Currently 9500 International and 13100 domestic passengers are handled regularly by the Indira Gandhi International Airport on an average basis.
