Coronation DurbarDelhi

India - Goa - Bodhgaya - Mysore - Pondicherry - Puri - Shimla - Srinagar - Trivandrum - Agra - Bangalore - Chandigarh - Varanasi - Hyderabad - Jaipur - Kerala - Kolkata - Pune - Udaipur - Darjeeling - Ahmedabad
A place to relive the past with a strong British connection is the coronation Durbar site which is the capital’s own junkyard of history. Most of the British statues have been kept here some what unceremoniously.

The place is little far from the city center and is located nearly twenty kilometers from Connaught place. The place is known as coronation Durbar because the British had held nearly three of them in the years 1877, 1903, and 1911.

Each durbar was important in its own rite with all major rulers of the country paying respect to the Queen way back in the nineteenth century. In the next Durbar which was held in 1903 King George V ascended the thrown, but the grandest of them was held in 1911 when the capital of the country was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi.
The foundation stone was laid in this area which was later moved to the Raisana Hill since the place was less prone to flooding.

Today the coronation Durbar is nothing but a dumping place for old statues, ones which used to adorn the various streets and important place of the city. The pick of the lot is the 15 meter high statue of George V who is seen wearing the coronation robe. The statue was removed post independence and this along with the statues of Lord Hardinge and Lord Willingdon form an impressive collection and a must for the lovers of the days of the Raj.

Getting to this place is quite a task but once you reach the place you will be treated some exquisite British collection of statues and artifacts that have fallen out of favour with the exit of the British. This is a place which is worth visiting if one wants to remind themselves of the great impact that the British had left while they were ruling the country.
