Feroze Shah Kotla is more famous for its cricket stadium and the controversy that had surrounded it renovation and all but the imposing citadel of Ferodabad which is also incidentally the fifth city of Delhi has loads to offer other than just cricket.
The city was built by the Emperor Feroze Shah Tughlaq, who was incidentally a great builder, it is said that Tuglaq had built a city that had spread over a large area extending from Pir Ghaib in the north to about Hauz Khas in the South West.
The city has quite a few excellent buildings including a few palaces, mosques and gardens perhaps a reminder of the great building talent of the Emperor Firoz Shah Tughlaq
This place was designed by Malik Ghazi and Abdul Hakk and in those ages the place used to be popularly known as Kushk-I-Feroz, Emperor Firoz Shah Tughlaq had built this citadel even after having three palaces in Delhi because there was acute water shortage in those areas, this water shortage had even prompted the Tomars to move westward towards Mehrauli.
The Kotla is considered the inner citadel of Firozabad and the place is full of palaces and a magnificent mosque which was envied by many after that.
Ironically most of the city lies in ruins and the only remaining structure is the Asoka Pillar. According to some contemporary historians, the emperor had taken great pains to make sure that no damage was caused to the structure.
Other than the Asoka pillar there are the broken ruins of the Jama Masjid and a round step well called the baoli. The place might be in ruins a reminiscent of the golden past that it had but it is still worth making a trip to the place and put together the missing puzzles and build up the beautiful structures in your heart and mind.
