Delhi boasts of numerous historical sites and monuments of which Hauz Khas in the heart of the city is a major attraction for the tourists here. Hauz Khas is a historic arena which credits itself for being a witness to the battle between Timur and Muhammad Shah Tughlaq in 1398. As it blends history and urban lifestyle, the historic site is today a haven for the visitors.

With remnants of a bygone period, Hauz Khas is today an interesting place to be in. Hauz Khas draws its name from the ‘Royal Tank’ or the artificial lake which had been constructed by Allauddin Khilji in the 13th century. The reservoir, which had served as a water cathchment of the period, is now a serene resort, inviting the visitors with its calm spread of water. The site houses the tomb of the Tughlaq ruler Firoz Shah Tughlaq. A number of other tombs mark the rulers of the 14th and 16th century. Another construction worth admiring is the Moth ki Masjid, an exquisite monument in the typical Lodhi period architecture. Standing nearby is an ancient college which had once served as the seat of education for the period. Hauz Khas was initially a typical North Indian hamlet replete with every aspect of rural life. The place is crisscrossed with narrow alleys, each of which lead to a multitude of ancient constructions. With its ancient mosques, madrasas, tombs, and market places, Hauz Khas thus recreates a complete pattern of life as it had existed in the period.

Hauz Khas is today a hub of tourist activities as numerous shops line the area supplying the visitors with a host of ethnic wares. The shops are indeed a dazzling array of antique jewelry, clothes, furniture and souvenirs which embody the essence of the city’s culture and past. Posh boutique and art galleries crowd Hauz Khas without hampering the quaint charm of the place. Popular restaurants like Park Balluchi, and Naivedyam, or the Village Bistro draw the visitors with a spread of north Indian cuisines and Mughlai delicacies.
