Khuni Darwaza was built during the reign of Emperor Sher Shah Suri for his city Shergargh, the gate is double storied built out of grey stones and it has red sand stone framed windows that makes it look really beautiful.

The Darwaza is situated opposite the Feroze Shah Kotla stadium and it was initially called the Kabuli Darwaza since caravans to Afghanistan used to pass through the gate, the structure is really intimidating as it stands tall and upright reaching up to 15.5 meters and it is an important part of the sky line. The materials which have been used in construction of the Darwaza are all local in nature and the Delhi quartzite is prominent among the materials that have been put to use there. One can access the different gates of the Darwaza using different flights of stairs and the place has been rechristened as Khuni Darwaza some what infamously because of the blood baths that the Darwaza has seen over the ages.

Slained bodies have been put on display at this place starting from Aurangazeb who had killed his brother Dara Shikoh and put his head for the public to come and see. Even Emperor Jahangir had ordered the killing of his two sons whom he suspected of plotting against him. The situation only got worse with the arrival of the British since one of their officers decided to add to the reputation of the Darwaza by killing all the remaining people belonging to the Mughal Emperor during the first war of independence in 1857.

The blood saga of the place didn’t stop with the British leaving the country as the place witnessed some nasty rioting during the partition, when a large number of refugees were murdered while they were moving towards the Purana Quila for safety.
