INTRODUCTION:

Safdarjung Tomb, Delhi is the last construction of the Mughals in India. Located in the center of a garden it reflects the glory of the great Mughals and their contribution to Indian architecture. It was the only structure to be raised after the demise of Aurangzeb, the last of the Great Mughals. Thereafter the weakned mughal emperors did nit find the stability to expand their architectural monuments. However, Shujaudaula, the son of Safdarjung built the Safdarjung Tomb to house the remains of his father.

Safdarjung’s Tomb Delhi is built in the middle of the 300 square meter garden laid in the pattern of the Mughal Charbagh style. Built in 1753 by Nawab Shuja-ud-daula, the Tomb apparently have two graves. One of Safdarjung and the other one presumed to be his mother. The tomb is laid on a raised foundation in the serene garden surrounded by halls quite away from the bustling city center. It’s a short walk from the Lodi Garden. The mausoleum has eight rooms all around the tomb.

Safdarjung Tomb was built in memory of Safdarjung who was prime minister of the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah. A great monument based on the style of Humayun’s Tomb. It has beautiful pavilions on either side – the ‘Moti Mahal’ or the Pearl Palace, the ‘Jangli Mahal’ or the sylvan palace and ‘Badshah Pasand’ or the favourite of the emperor.

The square structure of Safdarjung’s Tomb is surrounded by 8 rooms. All the apartments are square except the corner ones which are octagonal. The large dome rises from the sixteen-sided base. The mausoleum is referred to by some historians as the “last flicker in the lamp of the mughal architecture” because of the inferior quality materials.

Safdarjung’s Tomb has all the facilities for the tourists. The Indian nationals are allowed to enter on payment of Rs. 5. The foreigners have to pay Rs. 100. Photography is allowed but only by paying Rs. 25. It is open on all days.
