INTRODUCTION:

Shakti Sthal, Delhi is the memorial of the former Primer Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. She was the first and the only lady to be elected the Prime Minister of India and held her office for three terms. It was during her third term that her own guards shot her to death. Her body was created on the banks of Yamuna in the vicinity around Raj Ghat and the Shanti Van.

Shakti Sthal is located on the banks of the river Yamuna on the Ring Road and between the Old and New Delhi. The memorial is named Shakti Sthal, meaning “the place of strength and courage,” is quite typical of her character. As the country’s first Prime Minister she displayed great courage and determination and took the initiative to bring India into the path of progress and development set by his illustrious father Jawaharlal Nehru. She was a great statesman and respected all over the world. She was entangled in a very tumultuous period of terrorism in India’s history. In her last speech on the night before her death she said, “I don’t mind if my life goes in the service of the nation. If I die today, every drop of my blood will invigorate the nation.” The very next morning she shot by two of her own guards.
