INTRODUCTION:

Vijay Ghat, Delhi is the memorial of India’s second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was a great freedom fighter who was associated with the likes of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. After the death of Jawaharlal Nehru he was elected as India’s second prime Minister.

Born in 1901 in a Kayastha family he led many a struggle including the famous Non- Co-opration Movement o Gandhiji during the British Period. He was conferred upon the title of Shastri meaning scholar after completing his education in the Kashi Vidyapith which was a Nationalist School in Kashi. During the Satyagraha Movement laujnched in 1940 he was jailed for seven years. Following the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, he was sworned in as the Prime Minister following the socialist ideas of predecessor. As the Prime Minister of India he was instrumental in dealing with economic and food crisis faced by the nation. His famous quote ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kissan’ still pushes the farmer and the soldiers to action. It was due to his determination and a strong resolution that India succeeded in achieving a memorable victory in the Indo-Pak War in 1965. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest honor from the Nation.

Vijay Ghat meaning the Victory bank was made the memorial of this ‘little dynamo’ who died of a heart attack in 1966 during his peace mission to Tashkent. This Memorial is situated on the banks of the Yamuna just near an artificial lake to the north of the beautiful garden.
