INTRODUCTION:

Vir Bhumi, Delhi is the memorial of India’s youngest Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. The memorial is situated just next to Raj Ghat, the Memorial of Gandhiji the “Father of the Nation.” He was a great visionary who wanted to establish peace and harmony in the nation.
Rajiv Gandhi was the eldest son of Indira Gandhi and was made the Minister immediately after the death of Indira Gandhi. However he confirmed his position after a great victory in the General Elections that followed the death of his mother. This was a very critical period in the political history of free India with terrorism showing its ugly face in different parts of the country. His decision to send the Indian troops to Sri Lanka to fight the Liberation of Tamil Tigers (LTTE) proved fatal for him. The Congress Ministry was vote d out from office. In May 1991 while campaigning for his party for the forthcoming General Election he was killed by a suicide bomber of the LTTE in Sriperumbur, a place located 40 Km away from Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously for his contribution to the nation.

He was cremated on the banks of river just beside the Raj Ghat located in the main Ring Road. The site is reminiscence of the great leader who dreamt for a peaceful and united India. The memorial came to be known as Vir Bhumi meaning the ‘land of the brave.’

At Vir Bhumi, Delhi prayer services are held every year on the 20th of August which is his birthday and the 21st of May which is his death anniversary, with his family members, supporters and followers visiting the site to honor the great son of India.
