The Chawri Bazar, located to the west of Jama Masjid is a famous wholesale market selling specialized products like copper, brass and paper items. This market has an interesting past. It is said that this region was very popular for the charming girls who used to dance during the 19th century. The word ‘Chawri’ has been derived from a Marathi word meaning meting place. The place was called as Chawri because in the past, a meeting or sabha would take place in front of the house of a noble. The noble would try to settle disputes before it reached the court of the king. Thus it used to be the meeting place of all important persons. Besides there used to be a huge gathering when the beautiful dancers used to exhibit their repertoire in their skills and the crowd used to get enticed by such performances. Thus this place attracted a large number of crowds and was called Chawri Bazar. However the entire scenario changed after 1857, when the British destroyed the houses of many nobles.

At present Chawri Bazaar is a very busy marketplace with toiling laborers, crowds of people, a large number of scooters, cars and rickshaws. During the peak market hours Chawri Bazar surges with people, there is hardly any space left. The market specializes in metal products like beautifully embellished brass objects or other items like brass or copper idol of Lord Buddha and Vishnu. Though Chawri Bazaar is a wholesale market but it also sells certain items like vases, pots, oil lamps and jewelry boxes. Currently paper products have become more popular in this market and a wide range of paper products are available, from attractive wallpapers to wedding cards.
