The area came to be known as Daryaganj, the term Darya meaning-river and Ganj meaning market. The term Darya was used as the River Yamuna used to flow near this area.
At present, Daryaganj has emerged as a principal commercial hub of the Old Delhi region. In fact Darya Ganj is one of the three subdivisions of the Central Delhi District.This place has become very popular now and the region bursts with activities. The shoppers crowd this place from Monday to Saturday. On Sunday the region of Darya Ganj turns out to be the largest platform market of India for magazines and second hand books.
Apart from this Darya Ganj is also popular for its Sunday Market or the Kitaab (Book) Bazaar. Every Sunday Kitaab Bazaar is held on the street pavements of Darya Ganj. You can find a Hindi, English or other books written in different vernacular languages that are published throughout the world.
